DAY THREE:

It was actually warm today!!! I was told to cherish it because it's only going to get colder.... Today we actually started the curriculum for our classes. We learned about how to avoid being perceived as an ignorant American tourist and began an overview of the history of South Africa. We broke up in to discussion groups and played trivia. I was so relieved that the class was fun and i didn't just have to sit and be lectured. After class, we got the chance to listen to a diversity panel that our professors set up. The panel consisted of native South Africans that lived through the apartheid, some of which actually lived/were removed from District 6 that we learned about yesterday. Each guest told his/her story about how the apartheid affected their lives. Everyone had a different experience with the apartheid depending on where they lived, but all the stories were equally heartbreaking. But i kinda thought the panel was a little awkward because it included both white, black, and colored South Africans. After class, I finally got to walk on the beach! The beaches are completely flat with the softest white sand. Love love love love! I wish it was summer here so i could spend more time on it! Then we ventured to the grocery store. The grocery store is actually inside the mall, the largest mall in the southeast hemisphere. The mall is seriously so nice, like ten times Lenox and Phipps! Yet, I am so surprised with how cheap everything is here. One dollar is about 8 rands (South African currency), and I could buy a weeks worth of groceries for 300 rands...including four bottles of wine! And on that note... SOUTH AFRICA CARRIES BAREFOOT WINE!!! Best. Day. Ever. So basically this blog makes me seem like an alcoholic but its fine. Finally, my room decided to stay in tonight and cook dinner and it was quite the success! We made pasta with sun-dried tomato sauce, yummmy! But I am exhausted! This five hours of sleep a night is just not gonna work haha. Can't wait to see what adventures tomorrow brings but good night for now!

The house we have class in every morning!

My group...our name is the Stormers (it's a rugby team name)
